Rum – It’s Good For You

Having just read my fellow Gent Dr. Lee Dunteman’s post concerning rum, and being recently afflicted with a mild case of La Grippe, I decided that a Hot Buttered Rum – the classic LGA cold & flu treatment – was just the thing for it.  And Gents, I can tell you that, while it may not necessarily help me recover faster, it certainly makes the day more enjoyable.

The recipe I used was as follows:

  • a small amount – lets call it 2tsp – of butter
  • 2 tsp dark brown sugar
  • a small dash of ground cinnamon
  • 1 serving1 Gosling’s Black Seal Barbados Rum
  • some hot water
  • a little grated whole nutmeg
I mixed up the first four ingredients in the bottom of a mug, topped it off with boiling water, and as the great Jerry Thomas recommends, grated a little whole nutmeg on top2.
I’m already feeling so much improved that I just might have another…
  1. I use a “serving” here rather than ounces, wine glasses, or pony glasses, as the amount that constitutes a “serving” can vary from gent to gent, depending on his or her drinking experience and tolerance for adventure.
  2. Whole nutmeg, freshly grated, is vastly superior to the stuff from a jar. A nutmeg grater is must-have equipment for a cocktail-loving Gentleman Adventurer.
